Free radical scavenging activity of ornamental and edible cultivars of Canna found in Eastern India
(University Of North Bengal, 2011-03) Mishra, T; Goyal, AK; Mondal, P; Sen, A
Canna, the only genus of family Cannaceae, found in eastern India have gained economic importance for their starchy rhizomes and attractive flowers. The rhizome of some edible cultivars are consumed as food and herbal medicines in rural areas. The presence of total phenols, flavonoids and DPPH scavenging activity of both cold and hot extracts and their correlations have been studied for eleven cultivars of Canna spp. Antioxidants, quercetin and gallic acid equivalence of phenolic compounds were determined spectrophotometrically. It has been found that total phenol, flavonoids and DPPH free radical scavenging activity were higher in hot extracts than in cold. Further studies gave an idea about the correlation between phenol and flavonoid contents of both cold and hot extracts, but both the above said parameters were not correlated with DPPH scavenging activity. Finally it can be concluded that higher DPPH scavenging activities in all these Canna cultivars may not be due to the presence of endogenous phenols and flavonoids but these may be due to any other phytochemicals.

In vitro multiplication of Curcuma longa Linn.-an important medicinal zingiber
(University of North Bengal, 2010-03) Goyal, AK; Ganguly, K; Mishra, T; Sen, A
Curcuma longa Linn. is a herbaceous perennial plant belonging to the family Zingiberaceae. In viro protocol for the regeneration of plantlets from the sprouted rhizomes of turmeric was optimized. Murashige and Skoog media supplemented with different concentrations and combinations of cytokinins and varied percentage of sucrose were experimented. Murashige and Skoog media supplemented with benzyl amino benzene (BAP) at the concentration of 2mg/l and sucrose 3% showed the best regeneration in comparison to Kinetin when used singly. Combination of 2mg/1 BAP and 3mg/ Kinetin resulted in highest number of shoots. The same media showed spontaneous rooting. Healthy regenerated plantlets were selected for hardening in sterile mixture of garden soil and sand in the ratio of 1:1. Ninety three percent of the micropropagated plantlets survived to maturity when transferred to soil.

Molecular modelling of a pathogenesis related protein from Solanum tuberosum
(University of North Bengal, 2009-03) Thakur, S; Sur, S; Bose, D; Goyal, AK; Mishra, T; Rai, R; Bhattacharya, M; Bothra, AK; Sen, A
The pathogenesis related proteins are an important group of proteins produced in plants in response to infection by phytopathogens. The PR protein of Solanum tuberosum form an integral part of the host defence system. The unavailability of the crystal structure of the PR protein of Solanum tuberosum prompted us to undertake molecular modeling technique to look into the active sites and infer upon the structure function relationship. The model was built using I CFE as template. The functionality was studied. The model offers a reliable base to start X-crystallography and NMR based studies.
