Abstract
Bengali intellectuals, nationalists and independence activists played a prominent role in
the Indian independence movement; many shared connections with Japan. This article
examines nationalism in the Indian independence movement through the lens of Bengali
interaction with Japanese Pan-Asianism, focusing on the contrasting responses of
Rabindranath Tagore and Subhas Chandra Bose to Japan’s Pan-Asianist claims.
