The abortion conundrum(University of North Bengal, 2024-03) Basak, Jyotish ChandraThe present venture tries to bring out the moral contours of the abortion conundrums. It is a controversy that requires the efforts of scientists, legal luminaries, religious leaders and moral experts. In this paper, the author tries to show that at the core of the debate lies specific ethical concerns which pose formidable challenges before legal connoisseurs and others. It indicates that undue rights claim of either side are fraught with difficulties. Hence, utmost caution should be exercised while dealing with such an extremely sensitive issue. Citing many lawsuits and their verdicts, the author shows that though pro-choicers put forward many convincing arguments in favour of their stand, the pro-lifers' ideas work like a safety valve. Thus, we need to create a balance as, with time, the debate is assuming new character due to the ever-increasing sharpness in our analytical approach and tremendous medical advancement. The author adopts a positivistic tenor by holding that intense discussion by all stakeholders can help us to arrive at a stand which will, on the one hand, address the concern of pregnant women who want to abort the foetus for various reasons and also manage our disquiet about an unborn foetus.Item Open Access Proper name and some problems of reference(University of North Bengal, 2005) Bhattacharya, Dipa; Basak, Jyotish ChandraItem Open Access Scope and Substitution(Northern Book Centre, 2022-01-01) Bora, Mayank; Das, Kanti Lal; Basak, Jyotish ChandraThe problem of substitution failure in propositional attitude reports, raised by Frege (1892), led to the rejection of the Millian understanding of names. Taking after Frege, many have assumed that substitution failure depends upon the relevant names occurring within the scope of attitude verbs. It is also assumed that attitude reports (with one attitude verb) have exactly two kinds of readings: a substitution resisting one, and a substitution allowing one. The two readings are widely taken to be due to a syntactical ambiguity because of which the concerned names may be read either inside or outside the scope of the attitude verb. The overall received wisdom then is that scope is of absolute significance for the issue of substitution failure. I try to bring out a third kind of reading of attitude reports that, as I shall argue, show the received wisdom to be misplaced.Item Open Access The Surrogacy Conundrum(University of North Bengal, 2016-03) Basak, Jyotish ChandraItem Open Access Theory of human needs: critical analysis(University of North Bengal, 2018) Bhattacharya, Swati; Basak, Jyotish Chandra
